The main focus of the month was creating a new fruit bed. A couple of years ago I had converted one of my raised vegetable beds into a herb bed, with a knot garden design. However, it didn’t really work for me. I found that I wasn’t using any of the herbs from it as I was using herbs that I had in pots on the patio instead, and some of the herbs that I had planted got out of control. So I have decided to change it into a fruit bed with raspberries and strawberries. Hopefully I’ll get more use out of this. My raspberry varieties that I am growing are Groovy (a summer cropping variety), Autumn Treasure (a self-supporting and spine-free variety) and Yummy (a dwarf, compact variety). All three varieties are primocane i.e. they fruit on the current year’s growth. The strawberry varieties I have are Vibrant (an early variety), Malling Centenary (a mid season variety), Malling Opal and Malwina (late season varieties) so I should have strawberries over a number of months.
