I had hoped to grow one to cover the arbour around the seating area by the vegetable plot, but unfortunately it didn’t survive the first winter. So I am growing mine as a free standing ‘standard’ in the main border.
I prune it twice a year to encourage flowering – once in the summer after it has flowered, by shortening any whippy shoots to between three to five buds from the main branch, then in winter cut them to between two to three buds from the main branch.
I’ve heard from people that they are put off from buying wisteria as they can take a long time before they flower. My approach has been to buy the plant when it is in flower – that way you know that you won’t have to wait.
